Nick Clough

Members and friends of Mount CC will be saddened by the news that Nick Clough died yesterday.

He was a former Captain of the Club, back in the Seventies. After he moved out of the area he kept in close touch, attending the President's Match and others. For many years he was a tourist to Somerset, where his umpiring was much appreciated.

On a personal level, I enjoyed playing for a very good Westcliff 'A' Xl under his captaincy 35 years ago. On one occasion he declared after 2 1/4 hours, giving the oppo 3 hours to get our total of about 200 and us 3 hours to take 10 wickets. They didn't. We did.

I will send more news when I receive it.

The Club has again acquired the services of another excellent speaker in Gladstone Small, former Warwickshire and England fast bowler.

Glad played 17 tests for England taking 55 wickets along with 53 ODI appearances. His highest Test score was 59 against the Aussies.

Now a popular after-dinner speaker with a burgeoning reputation on the circuit we are sure to be entertained by his cricketing reminiscences.

We are again looking forward to another enjoyable evening at our new venue; the Park View Suite in Chalkwell Park just a quick single away from our Pavilion.

Could our members please ensure the continuing success of this function by attending in record numbers! Please come along, invite some friends, have a great time and help raise funds for the Club.

Please let me know if you wish to attend.

It would assist me greatly if you could please send me cheques prior to the event made payable to Westcliff-on-Sea Cricket Club.

Yours sincerely, Chris Heyburn
